What you can arrange before you arrive, and what has to wait until you land.
UK banks are built around one assumption that doesn't hold for relocators: that you already have a UK address. That's the sticking point behind almost everything below — some providers have found ways around it, most haven't.
A full high-street current account still expects proof of UK address — a signed tenancy agreement, a utility bill, or a letter from your employer or council usually works. Your NI number and passport or eVisa are typically requested regardless of which bank you choose. And UK credit history starts from zero — it doesn't transfer from abroad, which is worth knowing before you need a mortgage or a credit card down the line.
Confirm before you rely on this. Which accounts are open to non-residents, and on what terms, changes often — check current eligibility directly with the provider before making a decision based on this page.
